Why hinges go

Play is a worn pin, not a lost cause

Play in the frame or stem hinge is usually a worn pin, or wear in the hinge itself. Standard and oversized pins are kept in stock to bring it back to like new.

The rear hinge takes a lot of punishment — rider load plus every bump and pothole. A loose rear triangle means the bushes have worn, and those are replaceable along with new pins.

Upgrade

12 speed conversion

P or T Line fitted with the 4 speed derailleur can be upgraded by replacing the rear wheel with the Brompton 12 speed unit. Get in touch for costs — there is a write-up of how it actually goes in the journal.

Gear hubs

BSR, BWR, Sprinter and 12 speed

Bromptons have carried a lot of different gearing over the years. Early models used three speed or Sprinter five speed units; the current line-up runs the BSR on three speed models, the BWR on the six, the 12 speed hub on the P and T Line, and Shimano's Alfine 8 on the new G Line.

All of them are rugged, and all of them still need servicing. Regular hub servicing is what makes them last. Full details and prices are on the hub-gear workshop page — and your wheel can be posted in from anywhere in the UK.
