A wheel and hub being worked on at the bench

Wheel building

From a quick true to a wheel that does not exist

Rim or spoke replacement, truing, and custom builds to your specification.

Repair

When a wheel stops being round

When spokes break or work loose it affects trueness and compromises safety. The same goes for a rim with damage, or one whose braking surface has worn thin.

Truing starts at £10. If a rim is past saving it is often more cost-effective to replace the rim and reuse the hub than to buy a whole new wheel — particularly worth doing where the hub is a gear hub worth keeping.

  • Wheel truing from £10
  • Spoke replacement, singly or a full re-spoke
  • Rim replacement, reusing your existing hub
  • Worn braking surfaces assessed honestly — including when they are done

Custom builds

Wheels you cannot buy off the shelf

If you have something out of the ordinary in mind, or you need modern rims on a vintage bike, this is the part of the job I enjoy most. Get in touch with a description of what you are after.

Built around

Hubs most shops will not touch

  • Internal gear hubs — Sturmey-Archer, Shimano Nexus and Alfine
  • Hub dynamos, including vintage Dynohubs
  • Drum brakes and roller brakes
  • Modern rims laced to a vintage frame's original hub

To get a quote

What to tell me

  • The bike, and what you use it for
  • Hub you want to use, or want recommending
  • Rim size and brake type — rim, disc or drum
  • Anything the wheel has to fit around: mudguards, racks, a Brompton fold

Builds are quoted individually once the parts are settled.
